In the Schengen area we do not issue Schengen visas (short-stay visas type C).

We therefore only deal with applications for residence permits (long term stay) in our Consulate in Poland.

ABOUT HUNGARIAN CITIZENSHIP

What are the proofs of Hungarian citizenship?

The following are the proofs of Hungarian citizenship:

1. A valid Hungarian ID card.
2. A valid Hungarian passport. If your passport has expired, it still proves your Hungarian citizenship for one year following the date of its expiry.
3. A valid Hungarian citizenship certificate.
4. A certificate of naturalization, until proven otherwise.
5. The registry of personal data and addresses.

Your data is included in the registry if you have a so-called address card or if you had a Hungarian personal number before. If you left the country after 1978, you may find your personal number on a document called "személyi lap" (personal page) or in your old Hungarian passport or ID booklet.

Hungarian birth or marriage certificates are no proofs of Hungarian citizenship.

How do I become a Hungarian citizen if...

a) I was born during the period when the Act on the Exclusion of Dual Citizenship was in force and I could only acquire Polish citizenship under the Act (3 February 1962 - 22 January 1994)

In this case you can obtain Hungarian citizenship by simplified naturalisation if you speak Hungarian. Hungarian language knowladge (good communication level) is one of the conditions for Hungarian citizenship under the simplified naturalisation procedure, so the information about the whole procedure is available only in Hungarian.  HERE

b) my parents or grandparent emigrated abroad as Hungarian citizens, but I was born in Poland or somewhere else?

The main principle of Hungarian citizenship law is the ius sanguinis ​(latin for right of blood), meaning that descendants of Hungarian citizens are Hungarian citizens themselves by birth (regardless of the country of birth or the number of generations living abroad). Consequently, if any of your parents or grandparents is a Hungarian citizen or was one when you were born, it is very likely that you are one yourself. You can apply for the verification of your Hungarian citizenship. It is irrelevant whether you speak Hungarian or not.

Some notable exceptions from this general rule:

• Before October 1, 1957 a Hungarian woman lost her Hungarian citizenship if she married to a non-Hungarian citizen.
• Before October 1, 1957 a child born from a non-Hungarian father and a Hungarian mother did not become a Hungarian citizen by birth. He or she may become a Hungarian citizen by a statement, but his or her descendants have to be naturalized.
• If your Hungarian ancestor emigrated from Hungary before September 1, 1929, it is likely that his or her descendants were not born Hungarian citizens. You may be naturalized if you speak Hungarian. 

c)       I lost my Hungarian citizenship, or my parents/grandparents lost theirs?

You can become a Hungarian citizen by simplified naturalization, if you speak Hungarian. This situation usually arises as a ramification of the peace treaties that followed the First and Second World Wars. If you or your ancestors originate from the present-day territory of Hungary, it is more likely that either point a) or b) applies to you.

If you have lost your Hungarian citizenship for any of the reasons listed below, you might reacquire it by means of a statement, and your children and grandchildren may apply for naturalization if they speak Hungarian:

• you were deprived of your Hungarian citizenship by virtue of Act X of 1947 and Act XXVI of 1948, of Act LX of 1948 on Hungarian Citizenship or of Act V of 1957 on Citizenship;
• your Hungarian citizenship ceased by expatriation between September 15, 1947 and May 2, 1990;
• you were a person obliged to resettle in Germany.

d)      my spouse is a Hungarian citizen and I speak Hungarian?

You can become a Hungarian citizen by simplified naturalization on condition that at the time of your submitting the application

• you have been married for at least 10 years or
• you have been married for at least 5 years and you had a child together.
• and if you speak Hungarian.

e)      none of the above seems to apply to my case?

How does Hungarian citizenship affect my Polish citizenship?

It does not, given that both Hungary and Poland accept dual (multiple) citizenship since 1994. 

 APPLCATION FOR HUNGARIAN CITIZENSHIP

Should you wish to submit a citizenship application at the consular office of the Embassy of Hungary in Warsaw, please contact the consular office via email at consulate.vao@mfa.gov.hu before booking an appointment.

In the subject of the email, please specify which application you intend to submit (verification of citizenship, application for citizenship certificate, reacquisition of citizenship by declaration, renunciation of citizenship).

In our response, we will send you all the necessary information along with the forms to be filled out so that you can come prepared for your appointment. Otherwise we reserve the right to refuse and reschedule those who come with an incomplete application or without an appointment.

Please note that citizenship applications can only be submitted by having a previously booked appointment. Instructions regarding appointment booking will be also sent via email.

CERTIFICATE OF GOOD CHARACTER (CRIMINAL RECORD CERTIFICATE)

Any natural person, regardless of nationality, is entitled to apply for a certificate of good conduct.

An application for certificate of no criminal record/good character can be submitted only in person by prior appointment. Appointments can be made via the online reservation system.

ONLINE BOOKING SYSTEM

The certificate may include the following facts concerning the applicant:

• has no criminal record / not listed in the register of individuals indicted under criminal charges,
• is not subject to a ban of participating in public affairs,
• is not subject to a ban of occupation or certain occupation,
• meets the conditions of criminal record in the law selected by the applicant (see point IV. of the application form).

When completing the “Application Form for Certificate of Good Ch” for applying for a visa to enter the United States of America, the applicant must proceed as follows:

The point IV. of the application form "Compliance with other law” (“más törvénynek való megfelelés") should be replaced by "Requesting an American immigrant visa” or “For US visa” (“amerikai bevándorló vízum céljából” vagy “USA vízumhoz”).

In this case – if the applicant is not recorded in the register – the Ministry of Interior shall certify that the named person is “NOT INCLUDED IN THE REGISTER OF CRIMINALS”, also that s/he is “NO SUBJECT TO CRIMINAL PROCEEDINGS”.

If the client does not indicate the above in the application form at point IV., it may result in a rejection of the applicant's visa application for the United States of America.

The required documents and conditions:

• valid passport or identity card
• Hungarian address card (for Hungarian citizens)
• filled application form

The certificate is valid for ninety days from the date of issue.

The certificate is issued in Hungarian only. The Consulate does not translate the certificate.

Types of certificate of good character:

1. As an electronic public document, printed and certified by the Consulate (this is expected to take 3-5 days).

2. As a paper certificate of good conduct issued by the issuing Hungarian criminal authority

- to an address in Hungary,

- to be delivered by the issuing authority to the client at an address in Hungary.

The paper certificate of good character is expected to be available approximately 4-6 weeks after the application is submitted.

What is client gate?

The client gate (online personal portal) is an electronic governmental identification system that provides users with a single entry to contact different e-government service providers. The client gate can be established by anybody, regardless of nationality.

Which kind of applications can be submitted at the Consulate?

• initiating the opening of the first client gate (which was not preceded by temporary online registration),
• deleting previous client gate,
• modifying the data of an already existing client gate.

If you have already set up a temporary online client gate, there are two ways:

• delete/ unregister the online temporary client gate, or
• do nothing, wait 30 days for the registration to cease, and then apply at the Consulate for registering a client gate.

Applications can be submitted only in person by prior appointment. Appointments can be made via the online reservation system.

The use of the online reservation system and making appointment is free of charge.

ONLINE BOOKING SYSTEM

When booking, please select the “Ügyfélkapu” or the “Registration for online government services (Online Personal Portal)” case type.

The required documents and conditions:

• valid passport or identity card
• a document proving the applicant's mother's maiden name (e.g. birth certificate)
• valid email address

The registration of governmental client gate is free of charge.

Following the registration, the client gate system sends to the applicant’s email address an automatic one-time activation code, which is valid for 5 days.  You can use this code to create your own password. After 5 days, the applicant can request a new activation code within 60 days using the "forgotten password/ elfelejetett jelszó" function. Otherwise, the registration data will be deleted.

During activation, the applicant must enter username and a new password, which is valid for a maximum of two years (a shorter validity period can also be set).

After creating password, the full range of governmental services is available through the client gate customer portal.

Przyjmowanie interesantów:

Wizyta w Konsulacie od pażdziernika 2023 r. wymaga wcześniejszej rezerwacji online. Aby umówić się na wizytę należy kliknąć przycisk Időpontfoglalás/Zarezerwuj wizytę. Strona ta jest dostępna jedynie w języku węgierskim i angielskim.

 W poniższych sprawach  prosimy w dalszym ciągu o umówienie wiyzty mejlowo:

Ubieganie o obywatelstwo węgierskie, zaświadczenie do zawarcia w związku małżenskiego w Polsce, potwierdzenie danych świadczeniobiorcy (emerytura),  poświadczenie kopii dokumentu.

Na co zwrócić uwagę podczas rezerwacji wizyty online?

• Wybór lokalizacji i rodzaju sprawy, obowiązkowe jest podanie numeru telefonu i adresu mejlowego (również w  celu łatwego kontaktu, np. w przypadku zmian).
• Wizytę należy zawsze rezerwować na nazwisko klienta. Wskazując liczbę osób, należy brać pod uwagę kogo konkretnie załatwiana sprawa będzie dotyczyła, np. w przypadku wniosku paszportowego dla dziecka należy wpisać imię i nazwisko dziecka oraz wybrać jedną osobę (dziecko), niezależnie od faktu, że oboje rodzice muszą być obecni przy składaniu wniosku.
• Podczas rezerwacji wizyty najpierw należy wybrać rodzaj sprawy, a następnie jej typ. W przypadku niepowiązanych spraw należy zarezerwować dwa oddzielne terminy wizyty.
• Jeśli rodzice podczas jednej wizyty w Konsulacie chcieliby rozpocząć procedurę dla więcej niż jednego dziecka, to należy rezerwować termin dla każdego dziecka oddzielnie!
• Na jeden typ sprawy prosimy rezerwować jeden termin wizyty.
• Jeśli wykorzystanie zarezerwowanej wizyty z różnych powodów nie jest możliwe, prosimy o jak naszybszą zmianę lub anulowanie terminu. Można to zrobić elektronicznie, klikając w odpowiedni link na dole otrzymanej wcześniej wiadomości mejlowej.
• W przypadku spóźnienia nie możemy zagwarantować zakończenia procedury, może więc się okazać konieczna rezerwacja nowego terminu wizyty.
• W celu sprawnego przeprowadzenia czynności konsularnych prosimy o wcześniejsze wypełnienie wymaganych formularzy. Odgórnie określony czas każdej wizyty nie daje możliwości rozpoczęcia wypełnienia formularzy w Konsulacie. W związku z tym, w interesie innych klientów, nie jesteśmy w stanie przyjąć wniosków od klientów, którzy przychodzą z nieodpowiednio przygotowaną dokumentacją i niewypełnionymi formularzami. W takich przypadkach klienci będą musieli umówić się na nowe spotkanie w Konsulacie. Niezbędne formularze można pobrać ze strony internetowej Ambasady – zakładka Wydział Konsularny, oddzielnie dla każdego rodzaju sprawy lub ze strony internetowej Informacji Konsularnej.
• Wszystkie dokumenty prosimy wypełniać drukowanymi literami, piszącym na niebiesko długopisem, podpisy mogą być składane tylko w Konsulacie.

OPŁATY KONSULARNE, PŁATNOŚĆ

• Opłaty za procedury konsularne w EUR

Opłaty konsularne uiścić należy podczas osobistej wizyty w Konsulacie. Akceptowane są jedynie płatności elektroniczne.

Uprzejmie informujemy, że w związku za zmianami organizacyjnymi od października 2023 roku opłaty konsularne pobierane są w euro. Płatność dokonana w terminalu jest uznawana za transakcję międzynarodową, wymagana jest więc odpowiednia do tego typu płatności karta bankowa. System może obsługiwać karty debetowe i kredytowe wydane przez VISA, MasterCard i Maestro. Ponadto, system akceptuje również karty Revolut i innych podobnych firm, pod warunkiem, że są to również karty VISA, MasterCard i Maestro. System akceptuje również cyfrowe wersje tych kart zainstalowane na telefonach komórkowych, pod warunkiem, że technologia NFC jest dostępna na urządzeniu.

Wysokość opłaty konsularnej oraz sposób jej pobierania określa rozporządzenie nr 5/2010 (XII. 31.) Ministra Spraw Zagranicznych.

The legal basis for the collection and processing of your personal data is set out in Regulation (EC) No 767/2008 (VIS Regulation), Regulation (EC) No 810/2009 (Visa Code) and Council Decision 2008/633/JHA.

The data will be shared with the relevant authorities of the Member States and processed by those authorities for the purposes of a decision on your visa application.

The data and data concerning the decision taken on your application or a decision whether to annul, revoke or extend a visa issued will be entered into, and stored in the Visa Information System (VIS) for a maximum period of five years, during which it will be accessible to the visa authorities and the authorities competent for carrying out checks on visas at external borders and within the Member States, immigration and asylum authorities in the Member States for the purposes of verifying whether the conditions for the legal entry into, stay and residence on the territory of the Member States are fulfilled, of identifying persons who do not or who no longer fulfil these conditions, of examining an asylum application and of determining responsibility for such examination. Under certain conditions the data will be also available to designated authorities of the Member States and to Europol for the purpose of the prevention, detection and investigation of terrorist offences and of other serious criminal offences.

Your personal data might also be transferred to third countries or international organisations for the purpose of proving the identity of third-country nationals, including for the purpose of return.
